Fast forward 2 days to Thursday. Everything seemed normal. We were running late (as always), Connor got to wear his blue jean overalls for the first time & he looked so cute i decided that it would be worth it to run 10 minutes later just to take a few pictures!
On Thursdays i go to work straight from school so around 4:15 or so i figure out that my boss is looking for me. They say something about my sister on the phone & Connor is sick. Well, immediately, i'm worried. Connor really doesnt get sick (yes, he's on an antibiotic, but i don't consider a "cough" really sick) and he would have to seriously be sick for my "sister" to call. Well , when i get to the phone, its my mom...and she says that Connor is running a temp of 102 and asks what my grandmother should do (nunna/my grandmother had picked connor up from the babysitter that day). Nunna didn't have any motrin or tylenol at her house so i told Mom not to worry but to take some by there when she got off work.
By the time mom got to Nunna's Connor's fever had shot up to 103.5 which is pretty high considering his age. They gave him Motrin but it was back up again too 101 within 2 hours. I consulted one of the doctors at the office and she suggested alternating tylenol & motrin every 3 hours, that way, they always had something to keep the fever down.
evening: Connor was still not better on the Fever front, but he seemed to be playing well so we kept pushing fluids and tried to give him a little applesauce for dinner (probably should have help the applesauce, you'll see why soon). by 9:30, Connor had a fever again, so we have the Tylenol a little early and hoped for a good night.
Friday: My grandmother kept Connor for me Friday morning while i went to Christiana Elem. School for my education class. He was pretty normal, just wanted to be held, but didn't want to be still...very typical connor! When i got home, we took his temp again and it was back up to 100.4. i had not given him anything that morning for fever b/c i wanted to see if it would come back up or stay normal without meds. First, i called Jamie to make sure i wasn't being irrational by taking him to the doctor after having a fever for less than 24 hours, she thought an office visit was in order so, i called the clinic at Lunch. Of course, Dr. Collins was out, Dr. Bradley was booked (who i had talked to Thursday about C's fever) and i had to take Tyler to the Dr. at 4 to see Dr. Lowe so we made Connor a corresponding Dr.'s appt w/ Dr. Cade at 4:05. I figured Tyler could probably take care of himself.
What was causing this high fever and reluctancy to eat???
answer: Herpangina
terrible sounding right? well, its no walk in the park, let me tell you that. The best way to describe it is painful cold sores on your mouth and throat. basically, they are ulcers in the throat that you can't see unless you are a doctor and have a flashlight thing. They cause extremely high fever (high enough to cause seizures) and are accompanied w/ the loss of appetite because literally everything hurts. especially acidic foods (like...applesause). therefore, Connor was on a formula, water, oatmeal, yogurt diet for about 4 days or until he would no longer eat oatmeal/yogurt. And he still wouldn't take a bottle for ... well, he still doesn't take his bottle very well. Last Wednesday, i counted: he only had 7 oz for formula the whole day...he usually takes 7 oz in one sitting!!! This eating thing is a battle we are still fighting. it has definitely gotten better (will usually dring 3-6 oz per sitting) but its still not where i would like it to be.
Anyway, if you have stuck through all or most of this post, i comment you! I haven't sat down and really recounted the whole event until now, and i didn't realize how long it would be!
Here is a sweet picture of Connor in his overalls for the first time! They are a little short, but i think he had fun in them regardless...and despite having a temp!
